DNA and Paternity Requests

The office of the coroner maintains a blood specimen on all autopsy cases.

For law enforcement offices

A written request on letterhead must be submitted to the office. The order should be faxed and must contain a contact phone number as the specimen will need to be retrieved in person. The fax number is 419-213-3955. Please note that this pertains to Lucas County deaths only. Out of county deaths also need to have a written letter of permission from the corresponding county coroner before the specimen is made. These will need to be retrieved in person.

Paternity

To release a specimen for paternity testing our office requires a court order from the appropriate agency. (Normally it is the Lucas County Child Support Enforcement Office) A laboratory shipping packet should accompany the order for the specimen. Once all paperwork is received the specimen will be packaged in the shipping material and sent directly to the lab for testing. Our office does not receive the results. Out of county deaths also need to have a written letter of permission from the corresponding county coroner before the specimen is made. We do not allow attorneys to pick up DNA specimens.
